Activity Update for Week of 07.26.10 thru 08.06.10
The Town of Longboat Key has commenced construction of our Potable Water Pipeline Upsizing Project. This project consists of the installation of approximately 18,000 lineal feet of 12-inch to 16-inch diameter potable water main along the east side of Gulf of Mexico Drive. Construction of this water main will be within the eastern right-of-way of Gulf of Mexico Drive from Bay Isles Road to the South end of the Key. The water main improvements will facilitate pumping potable water from the South to the North on Longboat Key. No interruptions of water service are expected at this time.
The Town has contracted with Westra Construction Corporation for the installation of the pipeline. Activity began December 7, 2009 and is estimated to continue through September 2010.
Funding for this project has been provided by a low interest state loan under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. The base construction project cost is $2.1 million dollars.
Questions regarding the project may be directed to the Public Works Department at (941) 316-1988 or by emailing us at GMDpipeline@longboatkey.org

High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipe installation will continue using Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) methods. To learn more about HDD, visit our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS) page by clicking the blue button above.
There is no planned HDD activity this week.
Residents will observe active construction equipment and workers along the southern portion of Longboat Key until September 2010. A construction zone speed limit of 35 mph has been established by Florida Department of Transportation and posted for the North and South bound lanes of Gulf of Mexico Drive from the South Key Water Station to Bay Isles Road. Motorists should use extra caution while driving in the construction zone and obey the posted speed limit.
